USA COACH:Bruce Arena
Bruce Arena is regarded by many as the best coach in
U.S soccer history, and it is difficult to argue about
that. Arena has enjoyed success at every level at which
he has coached. He directed the University of Virginia
to five NCAA Division I titles and to a 295-58-32 record,
D.C. United to a pair of MLS Cup crowns (1996 and 1997)
and to the championship game of a third (1998), and
the U.S. National Team to consecutive World Cups (2002
and 2006), an unprecedented feat by an American coach.
Born on September 21, 1951, Arena has forged a reputation
as a players coach who has a no-nonsense persona
with the media. Players, friends and assistant coaches
say he has a sense of humor. "When its business,
its business with Bruce, D.C. United midfielder
Ben Olsen said. When you're playing soccer it's
all business. When you're off the field, he gives you
that freedom to be yourself and do what you want, as
long as it doesn't hamper your ability to help the team.
If you deviate from that at all, he's right on it. He'll
tell you about it.
