ENGLAND MARCHES ON
Beckham’s free kick defeats Ecuador 1-0
STUTTGART, Germany – Playing in sweltering heat, David Beckham’s brilliant free kick goal was all England needed to defeat Ecuador and advance to the quarterfinals of the 2006 World Cup. NOT EVEN KLOSE
Ecuador loses 3-0 to Germany in Group A finale
Stronger. Higher. Faster. That might be the motto of the Olympics, rather than the World Cup, but home team Germany took it to heart at the Olympic Stadium on Tuesday, toying with Ecuador for a 3-0 win in the final day of Group A competition.

ON A HIGH
Ecuador reaches 2nd round with 3-0 win
Ecuador's opponents complained it had an unfair home advantage during World Cup qualifying due to its home matches being played in the rarefied air of Quito in the Andes mountains, some 9,252 feet above sea level. Now, those same teams and other countries might be in awe of the South Americans' incredible rise to new dizzying heights in the world's greatest stage. Not only did Ecuador qualify for the second round behind its solid, 3-0 victory over Costa Rica at AOL Arena Thursday, the victory made the team and Germany the first countries to book a spot in the round of 16.

TOUGH ROAD FOR IMPROVED SIDE
Ecuador faces challenging opening round
Four years older and hopefully wiser, Ecuador enters its second consecutive World Cup a much more confident side, having gained much experience in 2002. But that doesn't necessarily make life any easier for the South Americans, who must traverse difficult Group A territory against host Germany, Poland, which is playing on its home continent, and a hungry Costa Rican side.

SUAREZ NAMES ECUADOR ROSTER
No Major Changes from Qualifying Rounds
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" appeared to be coach Luis Fernando Suarez guiding philosophy in assembling his World Cup 2006 roster. He tinkered with his roster during CONCACAF qualifying, and will face the world's best with much the same group of players.
