July 23, 2010 FINAL BOUND Four So Cal teams seek titles
OVERLAND PARK, Kan---Southern California teams had a busy Friday at the U.S. Youth Soccer National championships.
Under-18 Girls Laguna Hills Eclipse White (CA-S) and Eclipse Select 91/92 (IL) Under-18 Girls played a game of get to know you Friday. Both teams advanced to the finals after Thursday’s play. Laguna Hills’ Hayley Haagsma scored her first goal of the tournament in the 25th minute for the 1-0 Laguna win. Sunday’s championship final will have more on the line as the Laguna Hills girls stand in the way of the Illinois girls shot at back-to-back national titles
The RSL Florida 93 (FL) and Slammers FC (CA-S) game will be replayed in Sunday’s Under-16 Boys final. Today, in the 10 th minute, US Youth Soccer ODP Region III player, Lakota Thomas, scored the lone goal for RSL. The goal gave Thomas his third on the week to lead the age group and the 1-0 win advanced RSL Florida to the final.
The 2008 national championship finalist and 2010 National League champion, So Cal Blues Dodge, will make a return trip to the Under-17 Girls championship finals after an undefeated run through group play. The third victory came today against D’Feeters 93 (N-TX), 2-1. Lauren Bohaboy and Haley Rosen scored the two So Cal goals in the 32nd and 61st minutes and Jacquelin Strug tallied one for the D’Feeters goal in the 71st .
Two wins in two days put Syosset Sting 92 Elite (E-NY) into the Under-17 Girls championship match and Friday the New York girls faced a familiar opponent from the US Youth Soccer National League. Syosset defeated Slammers (CA-S) in league play 1-0. It was the Slammers with the early advantage on goals from Courtney Proctor in the 4th and Morgan Valenzuela just before the half for the 2-0 lead. Syosset’s Gabrielle Charno would cut the lead in the 65th for Syosset but the door was closed shut by the California side, 2-1. Syosset will look to avenge a 2-1 loss to So Cal Blue in National League play in Sunday’s championship final.
Real So Cal White Under-17 Girls took the 12th minute 1-0 lead over Michigan Hawks 93 with an Alyson Birgel goal. The Hawks’ Genevieve Shaba countered to tie the game at 1-1 in the 41st minute. So Cal began to breakdown the Hawks backline in the second half and Kathryn Speidl’s 71st minute goal broke the tie and teammates Bridget Berman and Mary Mazurek added additional insurance for the 4-1 So Cal win.
West Coast FC 92 (CA-S) won their final match of the 2010 campaign against 2009 national finalist Hicksville Strikers (NY-E). Alfredo Ramierez and Juan Guitierrez scored back-to-back goals in the 21st and 22nd minutes for the 2-0 lead in the first half. It was Guitierrez again in the 54th for the 3-0 West Coast win.
